welcome

Welcome to My World

My work is composed of a variety of architectural and natural elements as metaphors for self: the nest, tree, column, fence, and river. For me the fence is rich in meaning. The idea and purpose is one of boundaries: keeping wanted things in and unwanted things out. They evoke a sense of control and protection. They also mark the passage of time. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the nest, the ultimate habitat, symbolic of safety and security: “a snug refuge.” From “feathering the nest” to the “empty nest” it provides an apt metaphor for women’s lives. I have come to realize that the notion of safety and security is an illusion. Katrina and Rita have only served to magnify that. Fences and nests offer no real protection. We are vulnerable
